Salad Bowl Vegetables

Our range of salad seeds includes many types of lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, celery and tasty salad leaves such as 'Nice 'n' Spicy' Mixed. With unusual, tasty varieties there's lots to make your salads interesting. Salad crops are quick-growing and can be grown as 'catch crops' between other slower growing veg to make the most of the space in your vegetable garden. More varieties coming very soon.
  • Is mid green colour, tall with fleshy petioles. One of the best flavoured celery varieties available which is self-blanching, quick growing and has a good standing ability. Early to mid-season production and will grow where it is traditionally difficult.

    Celery is a forever popular salad vegetable with its crisp sweet stalks, but is equally as tasty braised or chopped in casseroles.

  • This versatile, reliable Butterhead variety is ideal for successional sowings throughout the year. Medium heads with solid, crisp hearts are produced from hardy reliable plants, even in dry weather. Autumn sowings should be grown under cloches or in a cold greenhouse for overwintering, but can be harvested in spring for early salads. Height: 15 cm . Spread: 30 cm.

  • Cos Lettuce 'Little Gem' is one of the earliest varieties to mature, producing small compact plants which are packed with a crisp, sweet heart. Excellent cultivar grows well under cloches and also has excellent root aphid resistance making it a gardener's favourite. Height and spread: 20cm.

  • White Lisbon Spring Onion Seeds

    This variety, White Lisbon, is very quick cropping traditional salad onion with white stems and bright green tops. Can be sown from early spring, in the summer and in the autumn too. Very hardy spring onion, can be overwintered under cloches, in protected areas. Onions have anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties, and also believed to lower blood pressure.

    Lettuce is hardy and can be planted as soon as the soil can be worked. Can be direct seeded to a depth of 1/8 inch, and firm soil gently. Can be started indoors 2 to 3 weeks before last frost. Also can be sown in the autumn for a late harvest.

    When seedlings are 1 to 2 inches high, thin/transplant to 10 to 12 inches apart. Replant thinned plants. Harvest with scissors 1 inch above soil line when plants are 4 to 6 inches high. Most varieties will grow back.
    Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh lettuce. In dry weather, keep soil moist and during germination. Grows best in cooler weather.

  • Also known as Tuscan, dinosaur kale (or dino kale), Italian kale, black palm, palm, and black kale, has a deep green color, pebbly skin, and soft, flat, elongated leaves. It is native to Italy (with darker varieties called 'cavolo nero'), with a much sweeter and milder flavor. These seeds are the original variety. The stems are also softer and thinner and can be enjoyed right along with the leaves.

  • This delicate butterhead is the crowned jewel of the heirloom garden. Tender yellow hearts are gently blushed rose, and the leaves are ethereally soft with the buttery sweet flavor signature of an old-fashioned butterhead type. Manageable medium-sized heads with early maturation and silky soft leaves.

    Plant early in spring or in fall for a treat that gourmet chefs love; matures in about 50 days for full loose butterheads, or less for baby greens. This variety is high in vitamin A.

  • Sometimes labeled Canadian broccoli, is a purple-stemmed kale with flat, wide leaves and scraggly edges. The purple stems are somewhat fibrous, so it's best to remove them. That being said, the leaves have a mild, sweet, earthy flavor, which makes them a good choice to toss into salads too.

  • Rosy-scarlet with a white tip. The crunchy flesh has a pleasant flavour. Good value for slicing.

    Growing Information:

    Crops just 5'8 weeks from sowing. Sow thinly, 1cm deep in grooves drawn 15cm apart. Make first sowings in March, in a sheltered position.

  • With perfect rosette shaped heads, the loosely formed leaves are deep green kissed with ruby red accents at the leaf tips. It has the soft, tender, butter-textured leaves with sweet, succulent flavour typical of Butterhead lettuces.

    The crunchy sweet buttery heads grow to be fairly small, around 15cm or so, with open leaves and a small tight center head. They are quick to size up and are fully mature in around 52 days.

    Rougette de Montpelier is very hardy and resistant to frost. Good when planted in spring and great as an autumn crop, they have good resistance to low temperatures - even sub zero and hold well into winter.

  • Plant anytime. We love them in the fall when flavor is mild and then we grate it onto salad and also salt pickle it for the winter or add it to kimchi.   • With its distinctive flavour, of is an old favourite and has been cultivated for many centuries. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. It is a member of the brassica family, but smaller at about 6-8 cm diameter when ready.
    There is some variety in skin colour: white, golden, or white and purple. The flesh is usually white or pale yellow and very crisp.
