Chicory & Radicchio Seeds

There are many varieties of each type of chicory / Radicchio providing a choice of flavours, leaf sizes, shapes and colours. The red-leaved radicchio types in particular make an attractive crop on vegetable garden and or in containers, or even in flower borders, as well as adding a splash of colour to meals.

  • Vivid pink color white / pink stems. The best color is achieved when it matures in cool weather. Start seeds in mid- to late summer and transplant to the garden in early fall. Pink Radicchio takes about four months to mature. Space plants 8-12 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Like lettuce, radicchio has shallow roots, so keeping it well-watered and mulched is important. Supply 1-1.5 inches of water per week. The most critical watering period is 10-14 days before maturity. Lack of water then can turn the leaves bitter. Heads mature at different rates. Pick when heads are soft, before a core (seed stalk) starts to form. They can be stored in the refrigerator for three to four weeks.

  • (80 days) Open-pollinated. Excellent 'known also as sugar loaf' variety with a head raised about 40cm., delicate light green leaves. The dense tight growth lends this variety to easy blanching, with the centers often naturally white. Known for its sweetness. Grown on our farm here in Pukekohe, it is sweetly mild for a Chicory and very pretty with reasonable resistance to bolting. Untreated seed. Hand Harvest seeds.

  • Mid-late. A lovely heirloom radicchio, Rossa di Verona has deep red, heart shaped leaves wrapped tightly around one another to form a solid, round head. This variety offers beautiful salads with red leaves. Cut off all the leaves above the crown in early autumn. It's the resulting new growth in cold weather that produces the characteristic small, compact, cabbage-like head. They can even be overwintered for spring harvest. It is harvested as a salad to be cut in autumn or spring when it takes the shape of a sphere. Resistant to low temperatures.
