Beans

The Beans belong to the family Leguminosae. We are considered healthy vegetables because they have high vegetable protein content. The green tender pods are used as dry seeds and as vegetables. Our large selection of bush green bean seeds, yellow bean seeds, pole beans, lima bean seed, dried and fava beans: we offer them all for home gardening or commercial. Fresh beans are easy to grow and highly nutritious, and wonderful colour, exceptional yields and much needed disease resistance. We recognize the organic modelling principles for growing of all our flowers, vegetables, fruits, etc., we also base our growing methods on permaculture natural processes. The following are of Heirloom and Heritage Varieties. No carbon credits is ever used on our property. All varieties are grown on our own farm.
  • Early broad bean 'Bizon' yields crops already 75-80 days after the sow. This vigorous, strong plant grows 90 cm tall and develops 14-17-cm-long pods that contain 2 to 5 large seeds. They are pale green, take on regular size and shape are fleshy and delicious.

  • Dwarf Bean 'Pencil Pod Black Wax' was one of the first stringIess, round podded & wax pods. Each vigorous plant produces black seeded, golden yellow pods, reaching up to 18 cm long.   • Flat beans are also known as helda beans, flat beans are similar to the well-known runner bean. They are flat, stringless green beans with a smooth skin.

  • 75 to 90 days. This multi-purpose (horticultural-type) bean that is used young as a green bean. The vines need good, tall, strong support as they are very vigorous and very productive. This means they get really heavy yields. In fertile soil, we have had them quickly top our six foot tall trellis system and double back down about half way.

  • A heritage variety of vigorous growth and productivity. Harvested young as snap beans or matured to be dried and shelled. Scarlet Emperor Beans are an old favourite. They are often just grown for their beauty ' how great that they can be eaten as well! The plants have bright red flowers and grow up to 3m tall, producing masses of smooth-textured long green pods that can be eaten as a snap bean. When left to mature they form seeds of a purple colour with black dapples and also make a delicious drying bean.

  • This very old bean goes by various names: Holy bean, Angel bean, and Soldier bean. Old Heritage Beans dating back to France / German. They are fast cooking and do not need much soaking time when dry. Angel beans have a very pleasant creamy texture to them and would be a good bean to use in dips or soups.

  • An ancient heritage bean, that is good eaten fresh and tender, but delights the eye when left to mature to beautiful round shaped maroon and white calypso/yin yang pattern. Another outstanding climbing (2m) dry pean type bean. Sow in trays in glasshouse in September or direct in the garden when chance of frost has passed. From trays prick out when true leaves appear and transplant into fertile soil at 15-20cm spacing under a trellis for support.
