Eggplants

Eggplants are a heat-loving vegetable in the Solanaceae family that require two or more months of night temperatures around 21 C., for optimal fruit production. These veggies are usually transplanted rather than directly sown in the garden.
  • This variety of aubergine (sometimes known as the eggplant due to its shape) doesn't seem to absorb the oil as much as other varieties, making it even more delicious! Its striking purple-black fruits have a lovely texture and whilst being popular for Mediterranean and Asian cooking. Black Beauty produces a heavy crop if grown under protection, but will perform reasonably in a sunny spot outside, sheltered from cold winds. For outdoor growing transplant outside after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny sheltered spot; plant out 90 cm apart in rows 90 cm apart and provide a sturdy support. For greenhouse or poly tunnel growing plant out into either larger pots or growbags. Needs sturdy support.

    Average yield is around 1.8-2.3 kg approx. per plant.

  • A medium early variety producing high yields of smooth, long and dark cylindral fruit around 20cm long. It has compact flesh with very few seeds that makes this variety withstand most handling and is easy to peel. Best matured in an unheated greenhouse, but will crop reasonably in a warm sunny, sheltered spot outdoors.

  • A good source of vitamins and minerals such as folic acids, fibres, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, copper, niacin, thiamine, vitamin C, B-6, K. It has a meaty inside and when you cooked, gives a creamy consistency. Its texture makes it a good stand-in for meat. This is by far our favourite eggplant, simply for its versatility in the kitchen. A heavy producer, this one loves the heat conditions.

  • 45-65 days. These adorable mini-eggplants grow on attractive, dwarf plants about a foot tall. Showy lavender flowers are followed by drooping clusters of tiny, deep purple fruits, ready for a prolonged harvest at about seven weeks after transplant. Try growing this highly ornamental variety in an attractive container mixed with colorful annuals.

  • Purple and white variegated Italian type. Nubia Eggplant is a hybrid with a beautiful purple and white variegated colour. Oval-shaped fruits mature to 6-7″ long and 3-4″ in diameter. Great variety for market stands. Solanum melongena. 70 days to maturity.
